Covering approximately 350,000 hectares of olive groves, Portugal ranks fourth globally in olive oil production, following Spain, Italy, and Greece. The nation’s olive oil is celebrated for its quality and distinct flavor profiles, influenced by its diverse microclimates and soil types. Spain and Brazil are the primary destinations for Portuguese olive oil exports, with Italy, Angola, France, and the United States also among the key markets. In 2016, Portugal exported nearly €500,000 worth of olive oil to China, marking the country as its 22nd largest export destination.

Portugal continues to invest in expanding its olive tree cultivation and enhancing production efficiency, with a strategic focus on increasing its visibility and market share in China. By promoting the unique characteristics of its olive oil—such as its fruity notes and high nutritional value—the country aims to tap into the growing demand for premium olive products in the Chinese market. As Portugal strengthens its global trade networks, its olive oil industry remains a vital component of its agricultural economy, bridging tradition and innovation to thrive on the international stage.
