The UK government announced on Saturday its support for London’s bid to host the 2029 Athletics World Championships, leveraging its rich experience in hosting top-tier sports events to bring the elite competition back to the iconic Olympic Stadium.
As Londoners and athletics fans looked forward to the weekend’s Diamond League, the ruling Labour government released a statement, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer personally expressing, “I am delighted to support this bid.”
Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, added, “Major sports events create unforgettable moments and have an irreplaceable power to unite the nation. That’s why we warmly back the bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships and World Para Athletics Championships, bringing the events back to the UK.”
She emphasized that the bid is part of a “transformation plan,” aiming to build on Britain’s reputation as a world-class event host. Beyond economic benefits, it seeks to boost community participation, inspire the younger generation, and showcase the UK’s charm globally.
