Broken Budget Promises
Originally promoted as a low-cost, sustainable and break-even Olympic event, the 2026 Winter Games has deviated drastically from its initial positioning. The total budget has swelled from 1.4 billion euros to 1.7 billion euros. Even with the Italian national team securing 30 medals during the competitions, the event still ended up with a substantial fiscal deficit after its conclusion.
Dual Causes of Financial Shortfall
The massive financial shortfall stems from two major sources. Delayed construction schedules and problematic infrastructure development have generated over 230 million euros in extra expenditures, including cost overruns for the Saint Julia Arena project. Meanwhile, revenues from sponsorships, broadcasting rights and ticket sales have fallen short by approximately 80 million euros.
IOC Stands Firm on Funding Refusal
The Winter Olympics and Paralympics concluded in February and March respectively, with the full financial picture gradually emerging post-event. Despite the mounting fiscal pressure, the IOC has maintained an unwavering stance, declining to intervene or provide supplementary funding to cover the losses incurred by the Italian host side.
Deficit Liability Clarified
Under the joint marketing agreement, the entire deficit will be borne collectively by the Milan-Cortina 2026 Foundation stakeholders. The liability extends to Italy’s central government, multiple regional administrations and autonomous provinces, as well as the municipal governments of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
